How to Iron Cotton Polyester

Incorrectly ironing a cotton polyester garment can result in a burnt hole where the fabric once was. One thing to remember about ironing is that not all materials are treated equally. Different types of fabrics, such as poly-blends, must be ironed with more caution so as to not ruin the garment. One of the more notable characteristics of poly-blends is that they are unable to withstand high temperatures.

Set the iron to a low temperature heat by turning the option dial on the iron. If the iron has an option setting for cotton, do not use this setting even though your garment is a cotton blend. Cotton fibers can withstand higher degrees of temperature than polyesters can, so the cotton setting is most likely hotter than what you want the actual temperature of the iron to be.

Position the cotton polyester garment on the ironing board. Separate the front and back fabrics of the garment by dressing the garment over the board.

    • 3

Test the bottom of the garment with the iron first, before pressing the iron down on a more conspicuous location. Place the metal side of the iron onto the poly-blend fabric, laying it down flat. Do not set the nose of the iron down first and the back after, or set the back down first and the nose after.

    • 4

Iron the garment by moving the iron back and forth around the fabric. Aim the iron at the wrinkles to smooth out the lines in the fabric. Choose one movement direction -- up and down or left to right -- and keep this motion consistent, so that you don't create new wrinkles. Always keep the iron moving, and don't let it sit for more than a few seconds in one spot or you risk burning the material.

Spray the water in the iron by pressing down on the misting button. This produces a light spray over the garment so that the iron removes the wrinkles more effectively. However, since polyester blends have a higher resistance to wrinkles anyway, you may not find it necessary to use the water.
