How to Make Eco-Friendly Dryer Sheets

Making dryer sheets is a good way to trim your household budget and prevent the sheets from adding to landfills, but the benefits of homemade dryer sheets go much deeper. According to Science Daily, scented laundry products -- including dryer sheets -- contain several toxic chemicals. Even dryer sheets touted as being environmentally friendly often contain substances that aren't listed on the label. The chemicals invade your home, and because they are emitted through the dryer vents, they also pollute the atmosphere.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a clean kitchen sponge in half. Alternatively, use soft flannel cloth cut into 6- to 8-inch squares.

    • 2

Fill a resealable plastic container with a mixture of one part plain, white vinegar to three parts water. Any plastic container with a secure lid will work. You can also use a glass jar with a tight lid.

    • 3

Add two to three drops of essential oil if you prefer scented dryer sheets. Use an essential oil with a light, refreshing fragrance appropriate for fresh laundry, such as lavender, tea tree or citrus. More sweetly floral scents can work for women, but might not be good for a man's clothing.

    • 4

Place the lid on the container and shake gently to blend the ingredients.

    • 5

Place the sponge pieces or fabric in the plastic container. Cover the container securely.

    • 6

Store the container in your laundry room, out of reach of children.

    • 7

Remove a sponge or fabric dryer sheet from the fabric softener when you want to dry a load of clothes. Squeeze firmly to remove excess liquid, then place the dryer sheet in the dryer.

    • 8

Dry your clothes as usual. Return the dryer sheet to the plastic container and reuse as needed.

    • 9

Wash the dryer sheet after every 10 to 12 uses, and then return it to the container.
