Orange Peels as a Shoe Deodorizer

Smelly shoes can be unpleasant, not only to you, but to the people around you. For shoes that can’t just be tossed into the wash, deodorizing can be a challenge. Luckily, you don’t have to spend a lot of money purchasing chemical deodorizers because you can use supplies that cost very little and can be found at any grocery store. Something as ordinary as orange peels can be used to eliminate odors overnight with very little preparation.

Instructions

    • 1

Peel an orange for each shoe that you want to deodorize.

    • 2

Slice the peels into 2-inch strips or 1-inch squares. Adjust the size according to the size of the shoe that they will be placed in. Larger shoes can hold larger pieces of peel, while small shoes, such as children’s shoes, might require that peels be cut into 1-inch strips or 1/2-inch squares.

    • 3

Cut a piece of tinfoil slightly wider than the shoe and 4 inches long. Fold the edge of the tinfoil on each side to form a square bowl to hold the peels. This will protect the shoe from the oils or acids in the peels. Create one tinfoil bowl for each shoe.

    • 4

Place the orange peels inside the tinfoil bowl. It doesn’t matter whether the peels are placed with the rind up or down, but they should be placed so that they don't come in contact with any part of the shoe.

    • 5

Slide the peels in the tinfoil bowl into the opening of the shoe. For small shoes, leave peels at the heel area, rather than forcing them into the shoe. For larger shoes, slide the orange peels into the center of the shoe.

    • 6

Place the shoes in an upright position on the floor or on a counter and allow them to sit overnight or at least 12 hours. Remove the orange peels, taking care not to tilt the foil bowl, in case any moisture from the orange peels has leaked into it.
