Sanitizing Smelly Shoes in High-Efficiency Dryers

Smelly shoes can be an embarrassing and hard-to-solve problem. Foot powders sometimes can solve mild shoe odors, but if sweat already has been absorbed into the material of the shoe, powders generally serve only as a temporary cover-up to the smell. It is perfectly safe to clean your shoes in the laundry, however, with high efficiency dryers, keep in mind that your shoe may shrink slightly in size. This is easily preventable, however, by allowing your shoes to air-dry after running them through the washer.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any laces from your shoes. If your laces also are very dirty, wash them separately. You may decide that it is worth the expense of replacing the laces.

    • 2

Place your shoe detergent in the compartment where you normally add the detergent in your washer. Shoe detergent is preferred over regular soap, as it is designed specifically for different shoe fabrics. Purchase shoe detergent from any footwear store.

    • 3

Use the gentle or delicates setting for your wash cycle.

    • 4

Load your shoes into the dryer. Dry for 20 minutes. If they are not yet completely dry, remove them and let them air-dry. This helps prevent shoe shrinkage.
