How to Clean Yellowed Satin or Acetate

Over time, your white acetate or satin garments may begin to get unsightly yellow stains, typically due to perspiration or body oils. You can keep your satin wedding or other special occasion dress looking as good as new by treating any stains before storing the frocks. The longer the yellow spots are on a dress, the more difficult they'll be to remove. With a few household cleaners and a little elbow grease, you should be able to send the stains packing.

Instructions

    • 1

Read the garment's care label before treating the fabric with any cleaning agents. Add a few drops of a gentle laundry detergent to a bowl of cold water and swirl with your hand to mix. Choose a detergent with oxygenated powers that is formulated to remove protein-based stains.

    • 2

Dip a soft, clean cloth into the soapy water and squeeze out the excess. Dab the damp cloth onto the yellow stain, working the soap into the fabric with small, circular movements.

    • 3

Allow the detergent to sit on the stain for up to 5 minutes. Continue dipping the cloth into the water and working it into the satin until the stain is gone.

    • 4

Rinse the soap out of the dress using another cloth dipped into plain water. Launder the dress on your washing machine's gentle cycle if the care label recommends it.

    • 5

Lie the garment on a flat surface, such as a kitchen table, to allow it to air-dry; the heat from a dryer may ruin the delicate fabric.
