How to Wash a Hypoallergenic Down Comforter

Down comforters provide extra softness and warmth to your bed, but the feathers used to make down comforters can be a problem for those with allergies. One alternative for those who want the luxurious look and feel of a down comforter without sneezing and itching all night long is hypoallergenic down. Hypoallergenic down is created through a process in which the manufacturer washes the down feathers multiple times to remove the dander, dust mites and dirt that contribute to allergic reactions. The care of a hypoallergenic down comforter is similar to that of a regular down comforter. When you clean and care for your comforter properly, it can keep your warm and comfortable for many years to come.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove your hypoallergenic comforter from the bed and place it in an extra-large capacity washing machine to accommodate for bulkiness and size.

    • 2

Fill the washing machine with warm water and add three-fourths the normal amount of gentle wash laundry detergent. Run the comforter through one regular washing cycle.

    • 3
White vinegar softens and deodorizes while killing tiny mildew spores.

Remove all traces of laundry detergent from the hypoallergenic down comforter by rinsing it twice. Add 1 cup of white vinegar to the second rinse cycle to soften and fluff the fabric while deodorizing it, too.

    • 4

Place the hypoallergenic down comforter in an extra-large capacity dryer. Add three to four unused tennis balls to fluff the comforter and prevent the down from clumping.

    • 5

Take the comforter out of the dryer every 45 minutes to rearrange it in the dryer, ensuring that all its areas get dry. Continue this process until your hypoallergenic down comforter is completely dry.
