How to Remove Yellow From VCT Tile

VCT -- also known as vinyl composition tile -- is made of vinyl chips pressed into a sheet of vinyl flooring. As with other types of vinyl floors, a yellowish discoloration may begin to develop on the tiles. The yellow tint is commonly the result of an excessive amount of wax on the tiles. If left untreated, the buildup will continue, and the floors will appear dull and dingy. You can remove the yellow from the VCT floors in the same manner as you would other vinyl tiles.

Instructions

    • 1

Sweep the tiles with a broom to remove dirt, hair and debris. Sweep the debris into a dustpan and discard in a trashcan.

    • 2

Open windows in the room for ventilation, and put on rubber gloves. Mix 1 cup of ammonia with 1 gallon of hot water.

    • 3

Submerge a clean sponge in the diluted ammonia mixture. Scrub the yellow discoloration with the saturated sponge in a vigorous back-and-forth motion.

    • 4

Submerge the sponge in the mixture when it becomes dry, and continue scrubbing until you have removed all traces of the discoloration. Continue if yellowing remains.

    • 5

Saturate a nylon scrubber in the ammonia mixture, and scrub the lingering yellow stains vigorously.

    • 6

Rinse the VCT floors with a cloth saturated in cool water. Wipe the tiles dry with a towel.
