How to Fix Scuffed Brass

The ease with which you remove scruffs, scrapes and scratches from brass depends entirely on how deep they are. While light scuffs are relatively easy to get out with the right tools and rubbing, deeper scratches may be nearly impossible to remove in a reasonable amount of time. When the job appears too much for you, seek the help of a professional metal and brass polisher with industrial-strength tools that burnish brass.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the piece of brass thoroughly with a wet rag. Cleaning won't remove scuff marks, but it prevents further scuffs if the brass is dirty.

    • 2

Buff the scratched area with a buffing wheel set to high. Hand-held tools such as drills have buffing attachments. Hold the brass object in one hand and the drill in the other. Continue buffing the affected area until you begin to see the scratches disappear. Move the buffing wheel as you buff the brass. Don't hold it in the same spot for long periods.

    • 3

Apply brass polish to a rag and rub it over the scratches. The polish will brighten up the brass and reveal any additional scuffs that need buffing. If you notice additional scuffs, remove them with the buffing wheel.
