Move the dirty clothes hamper to another room, such as the bathroom, if this is the source of the odor. If this isn't possible, use an airtight plastic container with a lid for storing dirty laundry to keep the smell in the container.
Empty the contents of your closet. Vacuum the floor inside to remove any dirt and debris. Use the upholstery attachment to clean on top of shelves and inside cubby holes.
Pour 1 gallon of hot water into a bucket. Add two to three capfuls of disinfectant cleaner.
Soak a clean cloth with the disinfectant solution. Wring out the excess moisture. Wash down the surfaces inside your closet to remove dirt and grime. Dry the shelves and walls with another cloth.
Fill a bowl with 1 cup of baking soda. Add four drops of your favorite essential oil. Use cedar or sandalwood, vanilla or a citrus scent. Stir the essential oil into the baking soda.
Pour the scented baking soda into a reusable plastic container with a perforated lid, such as a spice container. Each time you take off your shoes and put them in the closet, sprinkle the scented baking soda inside them to absorb sweaty foot odor and deodorize your closet.
