How to Get Rid of Carpet Soil From Around the Baseboard

Dark marks on carpeting around baseboards is known as filtration soil. This occurs when dust, dirt and other pollutants in the air settle on carpeting where a gap between the wall and flooring exists. The air then moves through this gap, and the carpet “filters” the particles. Vacuuming alone often isn’t enough to remove the soil. A more aggressive approach is necessary to clean filtration soil from carpeting.

Instructions

    • 1

Vacuum the carpet with a crevice tool to get rid of loose soil.

    • 2

Mix a solution of hot water and a few drops of dish soap into a bucket. Scrub the soapy water onto the soiled carpet with a scrub brush. Continue scrubbing, rinsing out the brush often in the soapy water, until soil no longer comes off the carpet.

    • 3

Rinse the carpeting with a rag and clean water. Blot thoroughly with a clean rag to remove excess moisture.

    • 4

Spray a degreasing carpet cleaner directly onto the remaining soil spots. Wait five minutes, then blot the cleaner from the carpet with a dry rag. Repeat as necessary until all of the soil is gone.
