Clean your basement regularly or at least once a week. Remove clutter and keep the basement organized to reduce hiding spots for the spiders to go. Spend at least one day a week sweeping, dusting and cleaning your basement.
Replace cardboard boxes with plastic lidded bins and boxes. Cardboard will attract the spiders and give them a dark, quiet place to nest which will expand the infestation. Try to avoid having any type of cardboard boxes stored in the basement.
Vacuum all floors, walls, corners and baseboards of your basement at least once a week. Be sure to use your vacuum's attachment on the walls and ceiling corners where spiders tend to live. Empty the contents of your vacuum into a bag and seal it up before throwing it outside.
Fill in any holes or cracks in your basement including the floors, walls, ceiling and around the windows. Use a caulking gun to fill these holes and cracks to prevent spiders from entering the basement.
Sprinkle diatomaceous earth in your basement, which is a natural insect repellent made of the fossilized remains of ancient algae. Sprinkle it near any entrance points in your basement and especially dark areas where spiders may frequent.
Set out natural spider and insect repellents such as eucalyptus, lavender and horse chestnuts in bowls or containers.
