How to Clean Smoke Off of PVC

Smoke can be one of the most difficult things to clean off of items in your home, including PVC pipes and furniture. Unlike many stains, smoke is not a solid or liquid and can permeate items, leaving its smell and a yellow discoloration behind long after the smoke's source is gone. Fortunately, it can be removed from PVC items by cleaning them thoroughly.

Things You'll Need

  • Large plastic tub or container
  • 2 c. white vinegar or liquid dish soap
  • Washcloths
  • Baking soda
  • Sponges
  • Ozone generator (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a large plastic tub or container with a mixture of water and 2 cups white vinegar or liquid dish soap. Place the PVC item in the mixture and leave it to soak overnight. If it is too large to soak or can't be moved, spray it down with the mixture several times.

    • 2

Remove the item from the mixture. Wipe it down with a dry washcloth to remove excess moisture.

    • 3

Sprinkle baking soda on it and then scrub it aggressively with a sponge dipped in vinegar. Use an abrasive cleaning product in place of baking soda if desired.

    • 4

Wipe PVC dry with a clean washcloth. Place it outside or in a well-ventilated area for several days to help remove last lingering traces of a smoke odor.
