How to Get Rid of the Yellow Discolor in an Older Shower Stall

Without regular maintenance, shower stalls can become discolored and grungy due to a buildup of mineral stains from hard water, soap scum and the growth of mold and mildew. Cleaning and restoring the shine to an old shower stall requires using the right cleaning products combined with a fair amount of elbow grease. There are many commercial bathroom cleaning products available but comparable results can be achieved with the use of several common household products.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on rubber gloves and ventilate the room. Common household products such as vinegar and ammonia have less toxicity than some commercial cleaners but can still cause eye and skin irritation.

    • 2

Mix together 1 cup ammonia, 1/2 cup vinegar, 1/4 cup baking soda and 1 gallon of hot water in a bucket. Then, pour the mixture in a spray bottle.

    • 3

Spray the shower stall liberally with the cleaning solution and allow it to set for a few minutes.

    • 4

Dampen the sponge with the cleaning solution and begin scrubbing the shower stall from the top down. For stubborn stains, dip the scrub brush in oxygen bleach or an oxygen bleach-based product and scrub until clean.

    • 5

Apply a calcium and lime remover on drains and showerheads to remove hard water stains.

    • 6

Rinse the entire stall with clear, warm water.
