How to Get Clothing Dye Stains Out of Leather

When clothing dye comes in contact with leather, it will leave a troublesome discoloration. If you do not remove the dye in a timely manner, the stain will become a permanent eyesore on the leather material. To remove dye from leather, use the same method as removing ink. Before attempting to remove any type of stain, always test the removal method on an inconspicuous area of the leather and wait 24 hours. Discontinue use if damage to the leather occurs.

Instructions

    • 1

Saturate a clean cotton swab with rubbing alcohol and gently rub the dye stain. Use a clean cotton swab as the dye transfers from the leather to each cotton swab.

    • 2

Wipe the rubbing alcohol off the surface with a damp, lint-free cloth.

    • 3

If dye remains, dip the corner of a soft cloth in nail polish remover that does not contain acetone. Rub the lingering dye stains with the damp cloth until no longer visible.

    • 4

Remove the nail polish remover immediately with a clean, soft cloth damp with water.

    • 5

Dampen a microfiber cloth with leather cleaner and conditioner. Buff the entire leather material with the damp cloth. Let the leather dry in an area out of direct sunlight and heat.
