How to Clean a Vintage Aluminum Pot

The use of aluminum in cookware dates back to the early 20th century. Keeping your aluminum pots clean can keep them usable for decades. As the aluminum pots age, they develop tarnish on them. Removing this tarnish as part of the cleaning process can restore the luster to your vintage aluminum pots.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any food that's burned onto the surface of the pot by filling the pot with two to three inches of water -- or until the food is submerged, whichever is higher -- and bringing the water to a boil. Allow it to boil for about five minutes, then remove it from the heat and allow it to cool. Dump the water out of the pot and scrape away the food with a wooden spatula.

    • 2

Wash out the pot with dish detergent and hot water. Make sure that you clean the corners when washing the pot, and use a scrub brush to remove any stains or remaining cooked-on food. Rinse the pot out thoroughly with water and allow it to dry.

    • 3

Clean the oxidation off the surface of the aluminum by filling the pot with water and adding vinegar, cream of tartar or lemon juice to the water. Use 2 tablespoons of the reacting agent for every quart of water in the pot. Boil the water for 15 minutes, then drain the water from the pot and allow it to dry. Repeat if necessary.

Apply aluminum polish to the outer sides of the pot, wiping it on in small circles with a soft rag. Do not place it on the bottom of the pot where it comes into contact with the heat source, or on the inside surfaces where it will come into contact with the food.
