How to Remove Silicone Sealant From a Sink Pipe

Silicone caulk is used to seal pipes when making a connection from one pipe to another. It is also used to seal the area where a tub joins a wall or other spots that are subjected to constant moisture. The object of silicone is to repel water, so trying to wash your hands — or your sink pipe — with water won't work to remove silicone.

Things You'll Need

  • Rubber or metal spatula
  • Razor blade
  • Mild detergent

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe the silicone off quickly with a paper towel as soon as it hits the sink pipe. If it's still wet, you can get most of it off simply by wiping it.

    • 2

Scrape the majority of dry silicone off a pipe, using a rubber or metal spatula.

    • 3

Use the edge of a razor blade to remove silicone from jointed areas or to scrape off thin layers. Once some of the silicone sealant is loose, you can usually pull much of it off in strings.

Scrub the area with a mild detergent and some water applied to a scrub pad. Dry the area thoroughly before continuing to apply sealant.
