How to Remove Soot From a Field Stone Fireplace Surround

Field stone offers a rustic look to your fireplace surround. It is extremely durable and is easy to maintain. Instructions

    • 1

Sweep or vacuum the soot and dust from around the fireplace. If you get any of this loose dirt wet, it will be more difficult to clean from the fireplace.

    • 2

Lay down a drop cloth or tarp to protect the area from sooty cleaning fluids.

    • 3

Spray the field stone with plain water. This helps to keep the stone from absorbing too much of the cleaning solution through its porous surface.

    • 4

Mix a few drops of liquid dish washing soap into 1 gallon of warm water.

    • 5

Dip a soft-bristled brush into the soapy water and scrub the field stone, starting at the top and working your way down. Dip your brush frequently to keep fresh soapy water working at the stone surface. Scrub continuously to keep the soap from drying and leaving dirt streaks.

Rinse the area well with fresh water and pat dry with towels.
