How to Remove Adhesive From a Porcelain Tub

Porcelain finished tubs are created from fusing powdered glass at a high temperature onto the tub material. The porcelain finish is very hard, but still susceptible to damage if harsh abrasives or highly acidic chemicals are applied to it. When removing stuck-on adhesive from the tub, it's best to stick with a less abrasive, safer solution, especially initially. If the adhesive is stubborn and doesn't remove very easily, using a chemical adhesive remover on the tub should typically not damage the finish.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the bathtub with hot water and let the water stand for at least 30 minutes to dissolve the adhesive. Rub the adhesive back and forth with your fingers until it releases from the tub.

    • 2

Saturate a sponge with hot vinegar, acetone or a citrus-based adhesive remover product, if the water isn't effective in removing the adhesive. Heat the vinegar on the stove or in the microwave just until it starts to boil.

    • 3

Squeeze the solution over the adhesive to saturate it.

    • 4

Allow it to sit for a few minutes before rubbing at the adhesive with the sponge to release it from the tub. Apply more of the chemical as necessary to soften and dissolve the adhesive.

    • 5

Rinse the tub with water to wash off any remaining chemicals. If the tub still smells like the chemical or you notice the residue is not washing off, clean the tub with a general household cleaner.
