How to Remove Discoloration on a Glass Oven Door

A glass oven door eventually becomes darkened with layers of grease, burn marks, smoke and grime. To remove the discoloration, you must clean the glass thoroughly. Clean the oven at the same time; otherwise, the oven door will quickly become dirty again. You should clean the oven and door at least once every six months.

Instructions

    • 1

Use the self-cleaning setting on your oven, if applicable, or clean the inside with a commercial oven cleaner, per label instructions. Alternatively, make your own oven cleaner with 1 part white vinegar and 4 parts water. Let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes before wiping the inside and door clean with a rag or sponge. Gently clean the heating element as well. Repeat, if necessary. Use a baking soda paste made with water or a citrus-based cleaner to scrub hard-to-clean areas clean.

    • 2

Scrub the oven door with a moist cleaning eraser to remove stubborn stains. Such erasers are available where cleaning products are sold. If necessary, carefully scrape away hard-to-remove stains with a razor blade. Do not scratch the glass in the process.

Rinse the inside of the oven and door with a damp rag. Rinse the rag frequently in clean water as necessary.

    • 4

Coat the inside of the door window with a thin layer of car wax, which protects the door from future discoloration.
