How to Keep VCT Tile Floors Shiny

Vinyl composition tile (VCT) flooring is widely used in commercial buildings, schools and medical facilities because it is available in a variety of colors and easy to maintain. After years of wear, tear and cleaning with harsh detergents, VCT flooring will begin to lose its luster. Restoring the shine is accomplished with a safe, natural vinyl polish that will keep the floors glistening without the need for potentially harmful chemicals.

Things You'll Need

  • Dust mop
  • 1 gallon lukewarm water
  • 1/2 cup ammonia
  • 1/4 cup boric acid powder
  • 2 tsp. mineral oil
  • Plastic buckets
  • Mop

Instructions

    • 1

Sweep the VCT flooring with a dust mop to remove any loose dirt, dust or debris. Avoid using a vacuum to prevent damage from the machine’s wheel and beater bar.

    • 2

Create a mixture of one gallon lukewarm water, one-half cup ammonia, one-quarter cup boric acid powder and two teaspoons mineral oil in a plastic bucket. Stir the ingredients until they are well-mixed and the boric acid powder is completely dissolved.

    • 3

Wet a mop with the mixture and wring it out until it is damp, not soaking wet. Scrub the floor with the homemade VCT cleaner and polisher, re-wetting the mop when necessary.

    • 4

Rinse the mop under a cool tap and fill a separate bucket with plain, lukewarm water. Dampen the mop with the water and rinse off the flooring.

    • 5

Wipe down the flooring with a towel to remove the moisture and prevent water spots and streaking.
