How to Remove Rubber Scuff Marks From Slate Tile

Slate tile is a durable stone that is mostly made of mica, chlorite, quartz and calcite. It is often used in flooring because of its durability, pleasing appearance and ease of cleaning. Slate is more resistant to water damage and scratching than other flooring materials -- like wood or marble -- are. Rubber often can be problematic on flooring because it scrapes off of shoes and leaves blemishes on the floor surface.

Instructions

    • 1

Spray the slate with a combination of half warm water and half white vinegar from a spray bottle, and allow the solution to sit for a moment. The acidity of the vinegar helps break up the rubber so it comes off with some friction.

    • 2

Scrub at the rubber scuffs with a scrubbing sponge. The slate is durable enough that the sponge won't scratch it. Use a nylon brush for stubborn scuffs but avoid metal brushes or steel wool.

    • 3

Sprinkle a small amount of baking soda onto any stubborn scuffs, add some hot water and scrub with a scrub brush to remove any remaining rubber. Rinse the slate with regular water and dry with a towel afterward.
