How to Clean Acetone Spilled on Linoleum

If you spilled acetone on your linoleum floor, don't panic. You can easily clean it up without damaging the floor, and with a few extra precautions, remove any lingering residue. However, the fumes from the acetone are a more of a concern, so take heed and ventilate your space until the acetone fumes dissipate. Overexposure to acetone fumes can lead to throat and eye irritation.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the windows in the room immediately after the acetone spills. Quickly, turn on the exhaust fan and open up a nearby exterior door. Also, close your interior doors to prevent the fumes from spreading to other areas of your home, such as in the bedrooms.

    • 2

Put on a pair of cleaning gloves and wipe the acetone up with a dry rag right after ventilating the space. Toss the rag outside until you are ready to wash it.

    • 3

Wet a clean rag with water and wipe up any remaining acetone residue. Rinse the rag and repeat two or three times.

    • 4

Dip the rag in soapy water made with dish detergent. Then clean the linoleum where the acetone spilled. This will ensure that all the acetone is completely cleaned up. Afterward, rinse the floor with a clean, wet rag.

    • 5

Rinse the rags with lots of water, flushing out all the acetone. Launder as normal.
