How to Clean an Old Pan Made of Tin

Tin is a relatively soft and ductile metal with a lustrous silvery white appearance. It is commonly used as a siding material for garages or sheds, in cookware and as a soldering metal. Though tin is highly resistant to water corrosion, it is susceptible to damage from alkalis and acids. If you've recently picked up an old tin pan from a thrift or antique store, you can restore it using simple household materials.

Instructions

    • 1

Saturate a pad of fine steel wool with water. Rub away any rust stains on the pan using gentle pressure and an even circular motion.

    • 2

Fill your sink halfway with warm water and add several drops of dish soap. Stir the water until it is sudsy. Place the pan into the water and submerge it for several minutes.

    • 3

Wash away dirt, oil and other residue using a dish rag. For removing tough residue, you can use a bristled dish brush.

    • 4

Remove the pan from the water and dry it completely with a towel.

    • 5

Scoop a coin-size amount of carnauba wax with your fingers and apply it to the pan. Spread on the wax thinly and evenly to prevent the onset of rust and other corrosion.
