How to Make Discolored Tub Drains Shine

Soap residue buildup, water mineral deposits, dirt and everything else that comes in contact with a bathtub can cause chrome-plated and other metal drain hardware to lose its shine. If such residue is allowed to build up and coat the entire visible portion of the drain, it will become dull and look permanently dirty. Buildup can eventually begin to impede the drainage holes, causing slower tub draining. Cleaning the drain cover until it shines again improves both the appearance and the performance of the tub drain. Make your discolored tub drains shine and last with three common household goods and a few rags.

Instructions

    • 1

Sprinkle baking soda or a mild scouring powder on the drain. Rub with a damp cloth until most of the residue buildup is removed. Rinse with clear water.

    • 2

Soak a clean cloth with pure white vinegar. Lay the cloth over the top of the drain. Leave it to soak for five to 10 minutes so the vinegar can eat through any hard water deposits.

    • 3

Wipe the drain clean with the vinegar-soaked cloth, removing the remaining residue. Rinse with clear water.

    • 4

Buff the drain dry with a clean, soft cloth. Apply a thin coating of baby oil over the top of the drain to help prevent hard water buildup and dullness in the future.
