How to Recognize Recyclable & Non-Recyclable Products

Though it's important to reduce waste, not every plastic, glass or paper product is recyclable. Sometimes it can be frustrating when separating recycling because it can be confusing what is recyclable. Every city and town has its own regulations based on what type of recycling is done at their local center. You can follow basic recycling rules when organizing the recycling, but keep in mind you should contact your local public works department for a complete list of items.

Place any clean cardboard or paper in the recycling bin. The easiest way to see if paper or cardboard is recyclable is looking for food residue. Any paper containing this is not recyclable. Most types of paper are recyclable such as newspaper, junk mail, cardboard containers and cardboard boxes. The type of paper that is recyclable will vary based on your local recycling center.

Flip the plastic container over. All plastics that are recyclable are labeled. Any plastic with a triangle containing "1" or "2" on the inside are always recyclable. If the triangle reads "4" it is sometimes accepted at your recycling center. A "7" is never recyclable. Make sure the container is rinsed out before placing it in the recycling bin.

Inspect the color of the glass item you wish to recycle. Clear glass is generally recyclable, but colored glass is not. These items should be separated from the rest of your recycling in most communities.

Clean out all aluminum cans you use. These are the most commonly recycled items. As long as they are free of food residue, you can recycle these.
