Cleaning a Toilet Cylinder Float Seal

The float valve within your toilet tank controls your toilet's water level every time you flush. Water must remain in the toilet tank for the float valve to properly register and maintain the water level in the bowl. Because it is in constant contact with water, the float valve's seal is susceptible to mold, mildew and hard water stains. If the seal fails, the float valve fails. It's important to keep your toilet tank relatively clean to prevent the float seal from rotting.

Instructions

  Turn off the toilet's water supply. Remove the tank lid.

  Remove as much water out of the toilet tank as you can with a plastic cup. Soak up any remaining water in the bottom of the tank with a sponge.

  Unscrew the float valve cap from the back of the toilet tank with a wrench. Detach the valve's tubing from the overflow pipe in the tank. Remove the float valve.

  Pull the rubber float seal out of the bottom of the float valve. Rinse the float seal and the float valve cap in the sink under warm water. Dry the float seal and cap well with a paper towel.

  Wipe the area around the seal in your toilet tank with a dry paper towel. This removes any mildew that has built up around the float valve and seal.

  Push the float seal snugly into the bottom of the float valve. Reattach the float valve's tubing to the overflow pipe. Replace the float valve stem in the tank.

  Reach beneath the toilet tank until you feel the bottom of the float valve. Screw the float valve cap back on over the float seal.

  Turn the water supply back on. Replace the tank lid.
