How to Remove the Tarnish From German Glass Glitter

German glass glitter is added to glass ornaments and miniatures to provide a reflective component. German glass glitter is made through a high-temperature process in which glass is tempered and coated with a thin layer of silver. This silver can tarnish over time, giving the ornament a vintage look. Restoring the piece to its new luster requires removing the tarnish. This process must be done delicately because you don't want to rub the glitter off the item.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on cotton gloves. Rubber gloves promote tarnish, according to Michigan State University Extension. Cotton gloves will keep finger oils from increasing tarnish and help you use fingers to delicately polish the item.

    • 2

Apply a coat of toothpaste over the glass glitter. The coat doesn't need to be thick. A small gel coat over the silver will be effective.

    • 3

Dip the item in warm water, wetting the toothpaste.

    • 4

Rub the toothpaste into a foam over the glitter. Use your fingers to rub in small circles, being careful not to rub the glitter off.

    • 5

Rinse the toothpaste off. Dry the piece with a cotton towel.
