Frameless Glass Shower Maintenance

Frameless glass shower doors use a minimum of metal, creating cleaner lines and a more appealing look in your bathroom. That frameless design has several advantages, including a superior appearance, but these shower doors can also be more difficult to care for.
  1. Daily Maintenance

    • Frameless glass shower doors require regular maintenance to retain their good looks, and that maintenance should be a part of every shower. Take a few minutes to wipe the accumulated soap and water droplets off of the shower door after each shower. Keep a small squeegee in your bathroom cabinet, and use it to wipe down and dry the shower door after each use.

    Remove Water Stains

    • Ideally, you should be preventing water stains from forming on your frameless shower doors by washing and drying the door after each shower. If you forget and water stains do form, use a non-abrasive bathroom cleaner and scrub gently to remove those stains. Apply just enough pressure to get rid of the stain. Scrubbing too hard could scratch or damage the shower door.

    Check for Leaks

    • One of the drawbacks of the frameless glass design for shower doors is that it is much more difficult to get a watertight seal. When you had your frameless doors installed, the contractor should have ensured that the glass was cut to the proper thickness, and that the doors were installed to exacting specifications. Even so, frameless glass shower doors can begin to leak after repeated use, so it is important to monitor them closely. Check the entire floor around the shower for moisture after each shower, and contact a qualified contractor if you suspect a leak.

    Surface Protector

    • Spraying a surface protector similar to the kind used on windshields helps the water in your shower bead up and roll off the frameless shower doors. This reduces water staining and makes your shower doors easier to maintain and care for.

    Nonammonia Glass Cleaner

    • You can use glass cleaner to clean your frameless shower doors, but the cleaner you use must not contain ammonia. Over time, the ammonia in traditional glass cleaners can eat away at the hardware, marring its appearance and even affecting its function. Read the ingredient list carefully any time you shop for glass cleaner.
