Ingredients for Laminate Floor Spray

Laminate floors are a durable, low-maintenance option for homes. Keeping a laminate floor clean requires regular dusting or vacuuming and damp mopping. Floor cleaners for laminate floors are available for purchase from your flooring manufacturer or where cleaning supplies are sold. However, you can make your own cleaning spray economically from common household ingredients.
  1. Laminate Floors

    • Laminate floors are available in styles that simulate the look of wood, but have greater durability and are more economical than hardwood. Although the floors simulate the look of real wood, there is no actual wood used in the production of the flooring. The product consists of four layers fused together with a wear layer on top that adds durability and scratch resistance. Flooring is also available in tile or natural stone options. Cleaning laminate floors is simple, but requires special care, as excess water can seep between the boards, causing the floor to expand, contract and buckle.

    Cleaning Ingredients

    • A solution of 1 cup white vinegar and 1 gallon of water or 1 cup ammonia and 1 gallon of water cleans everyday dirt from a laminate floor without streaking. Adding rubbing alcohol to the vinegar and water solution speeds the drying time of the mixture. Acetone fingernail polish remover or denatured alcohol can be used to remove stubborn stains, such as markers, lipstick, shoe polish or ink. To remove chocolate, grease, juice or wine, mix ammonia and water and rub with a soft cloth. Soap, detergents, wax and scouring products should not be used on a laminate floor.

    Procedure

    • Combine the floor cleaning ingredients in a spray bottle. Spray the floor in small sections, or spray a microfiber cloth or mop with the solution. Mop up the spray, going in the direction of the wood grain. Mop or wipe until no liquid remains on the floor surface. Avoid letting the liquid form puddles on the floor. Spray mops and steam cleaners apply too much liquid to the floor and are not recommended for use on laminate flooring.

    Routine Care

    • Laminate floor manufacturers recommend dust mopping regularly to keep dust and grit off of the surface of the floor to prevent scratching of the surface. If you vacuum, use the soft bristle or hard floor attachment prior to damp mopping. A mat at entryways traps grit, sand and gravel. All spills should be wiped up immediately so that liquid does not stand on the floor.
