Care for a Bamboo Salt Box

• Various manufacturers and retailers offer bamboo salt boxes, which range in size from about 2.75 inches tall and 3 inches wide to 3 inches tall and 5 inches wide. Some of these round or oval boxes have only one compartment, while others have two, but most feature a swiveling top on a rotating hinge. These products cater especially to eco-conscious consumers, as bamboo is a highly renewable and completely biodegradable resource.

Cleaning and Conditioning

• Bamboo salt boxes require gentle hand washing. Use biodegradable soap, warm water and a clean, lint-free cloth to hand wash your bamboo salt box after emptying it completely of spices. Dry the box immediately with a clean cloth, and allow it to air dry before refilling it. You can sanitize a bamboo salt box with diluted white vinegar. Condition your bamboo box occasionally by rubbing it with a light coat of mineral oil.

Storage

• Keep your bamboo salt box completely free of moisture in a clean, dry place. Don't keep the box near a heating or cooling vent, as moisture buildup may occur. Avoid any extreme temperature variations, which may cause warping. Ideally, these products should be kept in climates between 65 and 75 degrees F, with a relative humidity range of 35 to 40 percent.

Things to Avoid

• Do not apply vegetable oil, olive oil, canola oil or other types of cooking oils to your bamboo salt box, as the oil may turn rancid and contaminate your seasonings. Avoid commercial cleaners such as ammonia-based products, all-purpose cleaners and household bleach, as bamboo salt boxes are in constant contact with edibles. Bamboo products are not dishwasher safe.
