How to Decorate Lofted Ceiling Walls With Paint

Giving a lofted ceiling a fresh coat of paint will brighten up the entire room. Since the ceiling slopes upward, however, it separates the ceiling into different sections. This opens up more options for decorating the ceiling with paint. One option is to paint the entire ceiling one color as you would with a flat surface. Consider a more distinct look by painting the slated section of the ceiling a different color than the flat section. No matter which option you choose, paint the lofting ceiling in the same manner.

Instructions

    • 1

Wear old clothing that you will not mind splattering with paint. Wipe the cobwebs and surface debris off the ceiling with a clean dust mop.

    • 2

Remove items from the walls and room. Cover large items that cannot be removed with drop cloths. Place painter’s tape on the trim. Protect the floors from paint splatters by covering them with drop cloths.

    • 3

Place a clean paint roller on a roller handle and attach the extension handle to the bottom of the roller handle.

    • 4

Fill a paint tray with a stain-blocking primer. Roll the paint roller in the paint tray using a back-and-forth motion until the entire roller is saturated with the primer. Hold the roller above the tray and allow the excess primer to drip off.

    • 5

Apply the primer over the entire ceiling. The primer will prevent stains -- such as water, smoke and nicotine -- from bleeding through the paint. Let the ceiling dry for several hours before continuing with the remaining steps.

    • 6

Dip a small trim brush into the paint. Paint the area of the ceiling right above the painter’s tape. Continue in this manner until you have painted around the entire trim.

    • 7

Fill a clean paint tray with the ceiling paint. Roll the paint roller in the paint tray using a back-and-forth motion until the entire roller is saturated with the paint. Hold the roller above the tray and allow the excess paint to drip off.

Apply the paint over the entire ceiling using a back-and-forth motion. Let the ceiling dry completely for several hours. Apply another coat of ceiling paint if needed until you achieve the desired results.
