How Can I Remove Organophosphate Pesticides From Walls?

Organophosphate pesticides are some of the most toxic pesticides around. The World Health Organization outlawed most organophosphate pesticides due to their detrimental impact on the environment. Some organophosphates are still in circulation; however, homeowners using these products must be aware of their potential harm. Contact with these pesticides can cause dizziness, vomiting, seizures, paralysis or even death. If a major spill occurs, exit the area and contact a local hazardous waste cleanup crew. However, you can handle small cases of overspray on the wall yourself with a little soap and water.

Instructions

    • 1

Bar traffic in the room until the cleanup is complete.

    • 2

Turn off all ignition sources in the home or structure. Open all windows in the room and place a fan in the doorway to increase circulation.

    • 3

Put on a dust mask, chemically-resistant gloves, goggles, close-toed shoes and long-sleeve clothing.

    • 4

Mix 3/4 pounds caustic soda with 3 1/2 quarts cool water. Add the water to a container that can hold 2 gallons. Add the caustic soda flakes a little bit at a time. Stir constantly as you add the caustic soda.

    • 5

Dip a scrub brush in the solution, tap off any excess dripping and use it to scrub the wall. Rinse the brush frequently as you scrub. Watch dripping each time you rinse. Do not use enough solution to allow water to drip down the wall and pool on the floor.

    • 6

Wet a sponge or paper towel with water and use it to wipe all caustic soda water residue from the wall.

    • 7

Discard the paper towels or sponges in the caustic soda water bucket.

    • 8

Place sawdust into the container to soak up the caustic soda water until all the solution is absorbed and it is no longer a liquid.

    • 9

Put a lid on the container. Apply duct tape around the rim to secure the lid.

    • 10

Contact your city's waste disposal department, or the company responsible for your area's waste removal, to find out the regulations for disposal of organophosphate waste. Then label and dispose of the sealed container according to those regulations.
