How to Remove Shoe Odors From a Closet

Stinky shoe odor is something we all battle from time to time. Sweaty feet leave odor-causing bacteria in your shoes, creating an unpleasant smell that lingers. When confined to a small space, such as your closet, shoe odor has nowhere to go and can become overwhelming. Instead of being greeted by smelly shoes each time you open the closet, you can remove the shoe odor from your shoes and keep the closet fresh and deodorized.

Instructions

    • 1

Take your shoes off when you get home. Set them on a doormat in a well-ventilated area outdoors or near an open window.

    • 2
Vinegar is a natural antibacterial agent and odor-remover.

Fill a spray bottle with 4 ounces of white vinegar and 4 ounces of water. Spritz the inside of the shoes with the diluted vinegar to kill odor-causing bacteria and to get rid of the smell. Allow the shoes to sit on the doormat for one to two hours.

    • 3

Move your shoes to the closet.

    • 4

Remove the existing shoe odor trapped in carpet fibers by sprinkling baking soda over the carpeting in your closet. Leave the baking soda on the carpet overnight to absorb the shoe smell. Vacuum the carpet the next day to remove the baking soda.

    • 5

Cut a pair of nylons at the knees. Fill the foot of each nylon with cedar wood chips.

    • 6

Knot the nylons to prevent the chips from falling out. Place the cedar wood-filled nylon sachets in your closet to deodorize and to add a fresh scent.
