How to Clean the Refractory Parts of a Fireplace

Most prefabricated fireplaces have refractory panels that line the fireplace. These panels require regular cleaning to keep the fireplace and its surroundings from becoming overly dirty and causing soot and ash to spread throughout the home. Use a cleaning product that will clean the refractory panel without damaging the material whether it is metal or fiberglass.

Instructions

    • 1

Vacuum the soot from the fireplace with a long hose. Vacuum the walls and the bottom of the fireplace.

    • 2

Brush the refractory panels with a stiff, nylon bristled brush. Do not use wire brushes as these can scratch the fireplace. Brush to loosen the soot and dirt residue.

    • 3

Vacuum the soot residue up. Continue until the refractory panels are completely clean or until they are as clean as possible.

    • 4

Fill a bucket with the hottest water your hands can handle. Add 1 tablespoon liquid dish soap to the hot water and mix until the water is sudsy.

    • 5

Dip the brush into the soapy water and scrub from the top of the refractory panel to the bottom. Rinse the scrubbing brush to remove the dirt residue and apply more soapy water. Continue until the refractory panels are clean.

    • 6

Soak a sponge in clear water and rub it over the entire fireplace surface. Dry the area completely with a clean cloth.
