How to Get Mildew Out of a Jacuzzi

If mildew odor interrupts your home spa experience, it can be a less-than-relaxing time. A Jacuzzi hot tub that's used regularly should be drained and cleaned quarterly to prevent buildup of mineral deposits, dirt and mildew. Although the use of chlorine additives helps to reduce mildew growth, the spores can develop and thrive in the moist environment of a hot tub when anti-fungal solutions aren't used regularly in the water. You can get mildew out of your Jacuzzi with supplies that won't harm the surface of the hot tub shell.

Instructions

    • 1

Empty your Jacuzzi per manufacturer's directions.

    • 2

Fill a bucket with 1 gallon of hot water. Pour 1/2 cup of bleach into the bucket.

    • 3

Wear rubber gloves to prevent direct contact with skin-irritating bleach solution.

    • 4
Bleach kills mildew while removing its stains and odor.

Wet the hot tub cleaning mitt with the diluted bleach solution. Scrub the interior of the hot tub with the bleach solution. Rinse the mitt as needed. Apply more bleach solution and wipe down the entire interior surface.

    • 5

Dip an old toothbrush in the diluted bleach solution. Use the toothbrush to scrub around the jets and other grooved or textured area. Allow the bleach solution to remain on the Jacuzzi surface for 15 to 20 minutes to kill the mildew and sanitize the surface.

    • 6

Dampen a clean cloth with water. Rinse the hot tub surface by wiping it off with the cloth.

    • 7

Dry the Jacuzzi with clean cloths. Allow the interior to air dry overnight before refilling your hot tub.
