Directions for a Bedbug Flea Fogger

Foggers, or "bug bombs," are often used by homeowners and renters to kill infestations of bedbugs, fleas, cockroaches, pantry moths and other pests in a home. Although the effectiveness of foggers against bedbugs and cockroaches is debatable, used in combination with thorough cleaning, vacuuming and elimination of clutter, they are a useful tool in the home arsenal against pests.

Instructions

  1. Preparation

    • 1

Read all the manufacturer's directions before using a fogger.

    • 2

Remove all bedding and washable items from the room. Place them into garbage bags and tie the bags tightly closed. Put the bags in your car.

    • 3

Vacuum the carpets, cracks and crevices around the baseboards and behind the dressers and furniture.

    • 4

Remove the mattress and box springs from the bed frame and lean them against the wall. Vacuum the area thoroughly, using the stiffest brush attachment and paying close attention to the edges. Bedbugs hide along the cording and seams.

    • 5

Remove or cover all dishes, utensils and foods. Open cupboard and closet doors. Close the windows and turn off the air conditioner or heater.

    • 6

Turn off pilot lights and unplug the refrigerator and freezer.

    • 7

Cover the center of the floor with newspapers.

    • 8

Remove all pets and your family from the home before you set the fogger.

    Fogging the Room

    • 9

Shake the fogger can well before using it.

    • 10

Hold the can away from your face and press the button down to begin fogging.

    • 11

Set the can on the newspapers in the middle of the room and leave, closing the door behind you. Do not return for four hours.

    • 12

Go to the laundromat while the fogger is working. Wash all the bedding and other items in hot water with laundry soap to kill any bedbugs or fleas. Dry in a hot drier.

    • 13

Air the house out thoroughly. Open all windows, turn on all fans and the air conditioner. Do not allow pets or children into the house for at least another hour.
