Nontoxic Recipe for a Wooden Furniture Cleaner

A plethora of chemical cleaners for wood are available, but most contain toxic chemicals you may not want in your home, especially on furniture. A nontoxic cleaner can clean just as well as the chemical versions. Homemade cleaners must contain a mild ingredient that is strong enough to cut through grime. They also must contain oil to rehydrate the wood so it shines and looks it best. Homemade cleaners for wood furniture are also suitable for wood flooring.

Instructions

  1. Finished Wood Cleaner

    • 1

Mix 3 parts olive oil with 1 part vinegar or lemon juice. Lemon juice has a more pleasant scent than vinegar.

    • 2

Place the mixture in a jar with a tight-fitting lid. Label the jar with the contents.

    • 3

Dip a soft furniture cloth in the cleaner. Rub the cleaner into the wood furniture. Buff it dry with a clean cloth.

    • 4

Clean the wood with the solution at least once a week so grime doesn't build up and the wood doesn't dry out. Store the cleaner in the refrigerator between use so the oil doesn't go rancid.

    Unfinished Wood Cleaner

    • 5

Combine 1 pint mineral oil with 1 teaspoon of lemon oil. Alternatively, mix 2 parts lemon juice with 1 part each vinegar and linseed oil.

    • 6

Dip a soft cloth into the oil mixture, barely dampening it.

    • 7

Rub the oil into the wood, using a circular motion to spread it. Dampen the cloth for further application when it is nearly dry and the oil is no longer spreading.

    • 8

Store the cleaner in a sealed, labeled jar. Wash the cleaning cloths immediately following use.
