How Long Does It Take Liberon Paste Wax to Harden on a Wood Floor?

The French company Liberon has been making floor wax and cleaning products for more than a century. Look for this product at home improvement stores or order it online because you're unlikely to find it in your grocery store. Although most modern hardwood floors are sealed with polyurethane and don't require waxing, vintage floors that have never been refinished likely require waxing to protect them. Allow the wax to harden before buffing it; if you buff it too soon, it becomes a sticky mess.
  1. Time Frame

    • According to the company's website, after applying Liberon floor wax to a hardwood floor, wait at least 30 minutes for the wax to harden. Once the wax has hardened, it's safe to buff it to a deep sheen. The wax may take longer to dry in humid conditions.

    Method

    • To apply Liberon floor wax, first clean the floor and sand it if necessary. Apply Liberon sealer to bring out the original color of the wood. Shake the wax to mix it. Apply the wax to the floor in thin coats using a soft cloth, such as an old T-shirt or a lambswool brush. Once the wax hardens, buff the floor with a cloth or buffing machine until it has reached the desired sheen. Apply additional coats of wax, if necessary, to make the floor shine.

    Warnings

    • Generally, wax isn't recommended for floors that are sealed with polyurethane. Doing so can create dangerously slippery conditions. Consult your floor manufacturer before applying wax to a sealed floor. To determine if the floor is sealed with polyurethane, drop a bit of water on it. If white spots appear or the water disappears, the floor has been waxed. The water will bead up on a floor sealed with polyurethane.

    Maintenance

    • Once hardened and buffed, Liberon wax will protect your floor for several months. Rebuff it monthly to restore the shine and apply a new coat of wax once the wax wears thin. High-traffic areas require waxing more frequently. Don't wash waxed floors with water; wipe spills with a slightly damp cloth.
