Can You Use a Duvet Cover on a Sofa to Protect From Pet Hair?

Pet hair clings to upholstery fabric and is difficult to remove. Protect your pet's favorite sofa with a duvet cover. Duvet covers are large bags of fabric that are made to cover a bed comforter. They come in many fabrics and styles, so you can find one to match any room's decor. Duvet covers are designed to be removed and washed, so pet hair can be removed with a quick trip through the washing machine.
  1. Loose Seat and Back Cushions

    • Put the cushions inside a king size duvet cover. Place the seat cushions in the bottom of the cover with the front of the cushions against the seam at the bottom. Fold the top half of the cover forward over the top of the seat cushions and place the cushions on the sofa. Pull the top of the cover up against the back of the sofa frame. Insert the back cushions into the cover and close it.

Loose Seat Cushions and Attached Back Cushions

    • Place the seat cushions in the bottom of a king size duvet cover. Fold the top half of the cover forward over the top side of the cushions. Place the cushions on the sofa and fold the loose part of the duvet cover up and over the back of the sofa. Hold the edge of the cover in place on the back of the sofa with upholstery pins, which are corkscrew-shaped pins with plastic heads. Screw in a pin every 3 inches along the top edge of the duvet cover. Place the pins 1 inch above the edge of the cover. Screw the pins through both layers of fabric. Twist them in until the head touches the fabric.

    Attached Seat and Back Cushions

    • Fold the duvet cover in half lengthwise with the top side of the cover on the inside. Lay the folded cover on the sofa seat with the fold at the back. Tuck the fold into the crack between the back and seat cushions. Lift the top layer of the cover and fold it back over the sofa back. Cut 1-inch-wide strips of cardboard and tuck them into the fold of the duvet cover. Push them into the crack between the seat and back cushions as far as you can to hold the duvet cover in place. Insert upholstery pins along the edge of the duvet cover into the sofa back to hold the cover in place.

    Protect the Arms

    • Use pillow shams that match the duvet cover to protect the arms of the sofa. You can insert bed pillows into the shams and place one against the arm at each end of the sofa. Another alternative would be to drape the shams over the arms and hold them in place with upholstery pins.
