Removing Metal Markings From Flooring

Metal marks on flooring are often caused by metal on the bottom of chairs or metal wheels on carts. These marks are challenging to remove because they are often scratched into the floor's surface. Try a gentle approach to removing them, using the appropriate cleaner before trying a more abrasive method. You may have to repair the floor slightly after removing the markings. Avoid metal marks by putting floor protectors over any metal surfaces that have contact with the floor.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour mineral spirits on a clean rag and rub it onto the marks until they come off. This is non-abrasive and will work on most surfaces.

    • 2

Apply a small amount of mineral spirits to fine steel wool and rub onto the surface. This is an abrasive and can damage flooring, especially the wood's finish. It works well on hard surfaces, such as ceramic. Buff the mark out of the floor and then apply wax or polish to hide the steel wool scratches.

Sand wooden flooring with 220-grit sandpaper. This is a last resort solution for surfaces. Rub only the spot that has the metal marks until they are gone. Dust with a tack cloth and apply polish to cover the marks. If the scratches are deep or quite noticeable, fill them with wood filler in a matching color, allow it to dry and then polish as usual.
