Ammonia Mixed With Water to Strip Wax From a Hardwood Floor

A buildup of wax leaves your hardwood floors looking dull, dingy and ugly. Typically, ammonia is not recommended for hardwood floors. However, the ammonia will soften the buildup of wax, making removal a bit easier. If not used properly, the ammonia will damage, dull and bleach the hardwood, causing more harm than good. You must take care, when using ammonia, to prevent permanent damage to your wood floors.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour hot water into a 5-gallon bucket and stir in 1 cup of clear ammonia.

    • 2

Soak a sponge in the mixture. Use the sponge to saturate a 3- or 4-foot section of the wood floor with the solution.

    • 3

Let the ammonia mixture sit on the hardwood floors for three to five minutes. This will give the solution enough time to soften the wax.

    • 4

Scrub the softened wax off the wood with a soft-bristled scrub brush. Wipe the residue off the floor with a cloth dampened with lukewarm water.

    • 5

Repeat Steps 2 through 4 until you have stripped the wax buildup off the hardwood floors.

    • 6

Rinse your hardwood floors with cool water and wipe dry with several towels.
