How to Unplung the Toilet

Too much paper, waste or anything else solid that's dropped into the toilet can cause a clog. While prevention is the simplest route to take, an occasional clogged toilet is hard to avoid. The method that effectively unplugs the toilet really depends on the severity of the clog. Before you resort to the big guns, attempt to remove a toilet clog with simple tools and household remedies, and then decide if you need to use more stringent methods.

Instructions

    • 1

Don rubber gloves to protect yourself from germs and bacteria present inside the toilet, or from any waste.

    • 2

Reach into the toilet with gloved hands and remove clumps of toilet paper or any other items plugging up the drain area. Dispose of the items in a garbage bag.

    • 3

Pour 1 cup white vinegar into the plugged toilet. Sprinkle 1 cup baking soda into the toilet. Leave the two ingredients in the toilet for 10 minutes to help dissolve clog-causing materials as they bubble and foam.

    • 4

Flush the toilet if the water is low or there is no water in the toilet bowl. If the clog remains or if you are unable to flush the toilet due to a high water level, place a plunger over the toilet drain hole and move it vigorously up and down over the hole to release the clog.

    • 5

Treat any remaining clog by cranking the tip of a closet auger into the drain hole in the toilet bowl until it reaches the clog material. Continue to crank the auger to push the clog through or break it up so it can move on its own.

Rinse out the toilet bowl by flushing the toilet.
