How to Keep Dog Hair Out of AC Fins

The proximity of aluminum fins on air conditioner evaporator coils create ideal conditions for dust and other particulate matter to accumulate. Fibers, such as dog hair, are responsible for about 20 percent of this built-up material. Research carried out at UC Berkeley shows that coil fouling increases system pressure drop and, correspondingly, decreases system airflow and air conditioner performance. A properly installed unit will provide 10 to 25 percent average energy cost savings over its lifetime. As prevention is better than cure, a few timely actions will help keep the dog hair entering AC fins to a minimum.

Instructions

    • 1

Brush and groom your dog frequently to prevent dog hair from accumulating. Use a good quality shampoo and cream rinse on the dog to help minimize shedding. Some dogs shed more than others do, so take your specific pet’s hair coat into consideration when buying grooming tools.

    • 2

Wash the dog’s bedding at least once a week. Buy beds with washable covers and lay washable blankets over your pets' favorite resting places, particularly if your AC unit is in a carpeted room.

    • 3

Obtain advice from your vet if you feel your pet is shedding more than a normal amount of hair. Also discuss whether giving your dog extra vitamin supplements or changing its diet will be beneficial in decreasing the amount of shedding.

    • 4

Keep the area around the AC unit meticulously clean by vacuuming frequently. If possible, avoid laying carpets in the room. The preferred type of floor when you have shedding pets is hardwood or tile. Damp mop the floor regularly to remove any residual dog hair.

Remove dog hair from upholstery regularly. Use wet rubber gloves with raised grips, and run your fingers over the pet hair in short strokes. The hair is easily removed, reducing the likelihood of hair getting into AC fins. For hard-to-remove hair, use a pet hair magnet available in good pet shops. The magnet is a specially designed rubber blade that removes embedded hair from carpets and curtains.
