Vinyl Graphic Removal

Sturdy vinyl graphics and decals resist water and adhere solidly to the surface to which they are applied. These decal types are typically used outdoors, on cars or in an indoor area where moisture is present. Removing the decals without damaging the surface beneath requires care and the proper cleaning solution. The vinyl portion of the decal protects the pressure-sensitive adhesive. You must remove the vinyl without scratching the surface it's on to access the adhesive residue for complete removal.
  1. Tools

    • The tools necessary for successful graphic removal depend on the surface. A blunt scraper, such as plastic putty knife, removes the decal portion of the graphic without scratching soft surfaces such as paint or plastic. A glass scraper, which consists of a straight edge razor affixed to a handle, is best suited for use on windows, mirrors or metal surfaces that aren't as prone to scratching. You also need a solvent to break down the adhesive residue on the surface and cleaning rags to apply the solvent.

    Solvents

    • Common household solvents can soften the graphic adhesive residue for easier removal but are usually gentle enough to cause no damage to the underlying surface. White vinegar or ammonia break down most adhesives when allowed to soak into the residue, but they are mild enough for use on most surfaces. Harsher commercial solvents for decal and sticker removal work best on hard surfaces, such as glass and metal, that aren't as prone to damage. Read all instructions and warnings for commercial solvents before using them, and test any type solvent in an inconspicuous place before use to ensure it doesn't cause damage.

    Graphic Removal

    • Vinyl graphics have a waterproof vinyl coating over the graphic and a pressure-sensitive adhesive that holds the graphic in place. Remove as much of the vinyl graphic as possible using the scraper best suited to the underlying surface. Insert the scraper beneath the surface of the graphic and lift it off. Soak the remaining adhesive with your preferred solvent for 5 to 10 minutes, or as directed on the package instructions for commercial solvents. Scrub the loosened adhesive from the surface using a coarse cleaning cloth after the solvent has loosened the residue.

    Surface Cleaning

    • Residue may remain even after you remove the graphic and adhesive. The mild stickiness left behind attracts dirt and dust. Wash the area once the graphic is removed with a cleaning solution formulated for the surface material. An all-purpose cleaner works well on plastic, metal and painted surfaces. Glass cleaner is suitable for windows and mirrors. Combine equal parts vinegar and water to create a mild solvent cleaner suitable for most surfaces to remove any lingering stickiness.
