How to Keep Cigarette Smell Out of a Closet

If you notice the unpleasant smell of cigarettes in your closet, take action as soon as possible. The strong, offensive smell can be quite bothersome and may set into your clothing and accessories. In addition, the nicotine in cigarettes often gets absorbed into the walls and carpet, making it extremely difficult to remove. Before you pay overpriced professionals to remove the odor, try using a homemade remedy that will provide you with equally effective results.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a disposable face mask over your nose and mouth, and place plastic gloves on your hands.

    • 2

Pour 1 cup of ammonia into a large bucket.

    • 3

Add 1 gallon of water to the bucket.

    • 4

Dip a clean soft rag into the solution. Thoroughly wet the rag with the ammonia solution, then squeeze the rag to remove the excess liquid.

    • 5

Wipe the surface of the interior closet walls with the dampened rag. Use circular motions to clean the cigarette odor from the closet walls.

    • 6

Moisten the rag with additional ammonia solution as needed.

    • 7

Remove the cap from a gallon-sized spray bottle. Pour 1 gallon of water into the bottle, and replace the cap.

    • 8

Spray a light mist of water onto the closet walls to rinse away the ammonia. Use a second clean soft rag to rub the water into the walls.

    • 9

Pour 1 cup of ammonia into a small bowl, and place the bowl onto a shelf in the closet. Leave the bowl to sit in the closet for at least one week. This will absorb any remaining odors from the closet.

    • 10

Replace the bowl of ammonia with fresh ammonia after at least one week. Continue this weekly practice as long as it's needed.

    • 11

Tie a scented sachet onto the rod in the closet. This will provide the closet with an ongoing fresh aroma.
