How to Get Rid of Calcium That Built Up in Your Gravel Rocks

Aquarium gravel that has a hard, white substance on it usually has mineral buildup. This is caused by hard water or items added to the water that leach calcium. It's tricky to clean because you need to remove the gravel from the aquarium to sufficiently clean it, which can be a time-consuming process that's also stressful to your fish. Work slowly and carefully when removing the gravel in your aquarium to avoid scaring the fish. Stressed fish can easily become sick and die.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off all power to your aquarium's equipment to prevent shock.

    • 2

Scoop out the gravel from the bottom of the aquarium using a small, clean bucket. Work carefully and slowly to avoid scaring the fish.

    • 3

Place all gravel in a large bucket.

    • 4

Fill the bucket with a one-half vinegar, one-half water solution until the gravel is completely covered.

    • 5

Let the gravel sit for several hours or overnight in the solution.

    • 6

Agitate the gravel by hand to loosen the calcium and remove any other deposits.

    • 7

Drain the solution from the bucket and refill with fresh, decholorinated water. Drain the water and repeat until the water looks clean when you drain it.

    • 8

Replace the gravel slowly and carefully by adding 1 or 2 cups at a time back into the aquarium. Avoid disturbing the fish as much as possible.

    • 9

Arrange the aquarium as desired and turn your equipment back on.
