Removing the Sticky Applique Backing for a Tub Bottom

Bathtub appliques offer both decor and safety. They come in a variety of colors and designs, and when installed, make the surface of the tub slip-resistant. But over time, appliques begin to look worn from constant wear. The adhesive backing on appliques makes them tough to remove, but with a little ingenuity and a few common household products, you can remove the decal, the adhesive and any stains left behind.

Instructions

    • 1

Lift up the edge of each applique and peel it off the surface of the tub. Use a razor or plastic scraper to help lift the applique. Do this carefully so the top two layers of the applique don't separate and tear.

    • 2

Spray any remaining adhesive and applique with laundry stain remover or vinegar. Soak a cloth with the same solution and lay it over the residue. Allow the solution to soak for at least 30 minutes.

    • 3

Remove the solution-soaked cloth from the residue. Wipe the solution and residue from the tub using a dry cloth.

    • 4

Mix cream of tartar with hydrogen peroxide in a bowl and form a thick paste. Use this paste to scrub away any stains left behind by the appliques.
