How to Get Rid of Faucet Evaporation Scales

Tap water contains a variety of dissolved minerals, including calcium and magnesium carbonates. When water containing high levels of these mineral salts evaporates from a surface, it leaves behind an unsightly whitish residue known as lime scale. This hard mineral residue is insoluble in water, and scrubbing it with abrasive materials can damage the finish of fixtures and other surfaces. Therefore, it’s best to dissolve lime scale with a common household acid like lemon juice or white vinegar.

Instructions

  1. Removing Light Buildup

    • 1

      Cut a lemon in half.

    • 2

Rub the cut halves of the lemon over your faucet and other fixtures until the lime scale dissolves.

    • 3

Wipe the lemon juice from the fixtures with a wet sponge. Rinse the fixtures with distilled water and dry them with a clean cloth.

    Removing Heavy Buildup

    • 4

Pour 2 cups of vinegar into a bowl.

    • 5

Soak a cleaning cloth in the vinegar. Wrap it around the faucet, making sure that the wet cloth is in contact with all areas affected by scale. Repeat this process for your taps and other fixtures, if necessary. Allow the wet cloth to stay in contact with the lime scale for at least one hour.

    • 6

Remove the vinegar-soaked cleaning cloths. Scrub away any remaining scale with an old toothbrush or vegetable brush.

    • 7

Wipe the vinegar from the fixtures with a clean sponge. Rinse the fixtures with distilled water and dry them with a clean cloth.
