How to Build a PVC Roof Rake

Removing snow from your roof is an important, yet frequently overlooked, part of maintaining your home. Excessive snow can lead to ice dams in your gutters and possible damage to your home. Prevent such damage by removing the snow from your roof with a roof rake. Building a roof rake out of PVC piping is an excellent way to prepare for the winter.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut two pieces of 1-foot PVC pipe with the hacksaw. Smooth off the edges of the pipes with a medium grit sandpaper.

    • 2

Apply PVC glue to the ends of the pipes and insert one end of each pipe into the opposing ends of the Tee fitting; allow the glue to dry.

    • 3

Make two marks on the backs of the pipes one-half inch away from the ends of the Tee fittings. Use the marker to make two more marks 1 inch away from the ends of the PVC pipes. Drill four holes through the PVC pipes at the marks.

    • 4

Position the pipes against the back of the plastic or wood board, centered and approximately 1 inch down from the top of the board. Mark the location of the drill holes on the board. Remove the pipes and drill four holes into the board at the marks you made.

    • 5

Align the pipes with the board. Slip the bolts through the holes, with a washer in front and back of the openings, and secure the bolts with the nuts. Tighten with the adjustable wrench.

    • 6

Dab glue on one end of the 20-foot piece of PVC pipe. Insert the glued end of the pipe into the remaining hole of the Tee fitting.
