How to Get Rid of Insects in the Pantry

The larvae of several insects, including the Indian meal moth, the warehouse beetle, the sawtooth grain beetle and the confused flour beetle, damage food kept in the pantry. Pantry pests eat baking mixes, cereal, cocoa, nuts, dried fruit, pet food and almost any other dry food. These insects not only consume food, they contaminate it with droppings, irritating hairs and even toxins.

Instructions

  1. Getting Rid of Infestation

    • 1

Dispose of all infested food. Seal it tightly in bags before throwing it into the trash to prevent insects from re-entering home.

    • 2

Vacuum all shelves thoroughly, including corners and crevices, to ensure all spilled food is removed. Sweep or vacuum the pantry floor as well.

    • 3

Wipe down all shelves with warm, soapy water to ensure any eggs, larvae and pupae are also removed.

    Preventing New Infestations

    • 4

Place new food in airtight, plastic containers and clean them, inside and out, regularly.

    • 5

Keep shelves clean and free of any spills. According to the University of California, some pantry pests can survive on small amounts of food.

    • 6

Use stored items quickly. Stored food that is left undisturbed for a long period is more likely to be infested than food used frequently.

    • 7

Keep your pantry dry. Moist conditions encourage pantry pests.
